Introduction - Search engine optimization is many things, it's an art and it's a a science. SEO is creative and it's technical. It's logical, parasitic and opportunistic. The aim of seo is to maximise targeted types of valuable traffic to a website from search engines by improving the visibility of said website in Google organic or unpaid SERPS. Traditionally, this has meant aiming for no1, or top ten positions in Google but SEO has evolved and now a SEO needs to be more a marketer than just a tech geek. A seo needs to be concerned, not just with high positions in Google for relevant keywords, but with analysing competition, traffic and analytics, and converting traffic to leads and sales. I like to draw a line between SEO and Linkbuilding. One (SEO) is on-page (on-site), the other, off-site (Linkbuilding).

Connect On TwitterSEO is not gaming Google (for us anyway). It's about trying to understand how and why Google engineers want to rank pages above others. SEO is about optimising a site to give Google what it wants, and at the same time, meeting the requirements, the intent, of a specific search engine visitor i.e. to buy something, to learn something, to store something, to communicate with someone.

This search engine optimization tutorial is aimed at beginners who want a start point for learning the basics of Google SEO without being suckered into buying regurgitated SEO Ebooks not worth the bandwidth to download never mind pay for. Google changes how it works, slightly, every day. You never know which Google DC you are seeing. Nobody knows exactly how Google works. But the principles of SEO are pretty longstanding.

In the end, Google success comes down to quality links from real websites, good content, and good syndication networks be they automated or human. SEO is not free. It can take weeks and even months or years to see the fruit of your labour. And there are no guarantees with SEO. It is however potentially the most rewarding online marketing effort you can make for your business.

This SEO guide to Google is an ongoing project - I thought it would be a useful edition to the site. I'll be adding links to relevant seo related websites often. Contact me here (email link) if you want to contribute to improve the page. Subscribe to the Hobo feed to learn about new SEO stuff. A lot of this is my honest personal opinion about SEO or it wouldn't be here so clearly no warranties. Test everything you read.... yourself. Every site is a different set of circumstances. You don't stop learning SEO. Google Ranking factors change over time.

5 Ways to Build Links at an SEO Conference

This week I pretty much have two things on my mind: beta launch and conferences. Since Rand will be covering the beta launch later today (wheeeeee) I thought I'd focus on the conferences. Along with preparing for our own PRO Seminar later this month, we've been discussing the various conferences we'll be attending and speaking at over the next few months. Personally I'm getting excited for SES San Francisco next week. With the change of venue and being a part of Connected Marketing Week it's going to be a great event. It also got me thinking about how attendees and speakers can use going to the conference as a link building exercise.

Anyone can easily acquire a few links by sponsoring the event, but I wanted to come up with some creative ways to gain links without actually paying anything. Ok, well without paying for anything more than the cost of attending the event. Let's get started!

1. Speak at the event

Speaking on a panel is one of the easiest ways to get a link directly from a conference. Unfortunately it's also probably the most difficult for most people. Not everyone gets excited about standing up in front of a room full of fellow internet marketers and speaking. But if you're the type who loves what you do, has great advice, experience and/or examples on a specific topic and doesn't mind speaking in public, then it's time to get rolling! There are tons of conferences (seminars, trainings, etc.) from big to small, international to local that you could speak at. Find the one that's right for you and reap the rewards from the links.

Ok, so where do the links come from? First, you'll normally get a link from the actual conference itself where they list their speakers. You'll also get links from people who write about the session you speak on. For example, Lisa Barone always links to the speaker's website in her liveblogging coverage. Here's one of many examples.

Pubcon Speaker List

Simply by speaking at the event puts your name and company out there to the masses and gives them a reason to write about you. But perhaps speaking isn't your calling, let's see where else you can gain a link or two.

2. Liveblog or Livetweet

There are a number of benefits of live blogging, such as adding great content to your site and hopefully increasing your SEO value. But don't forget that many conferences will link to liveblog coverage of their event. Booyah! Now... don't get me wrong, live blogging is NOT easy. It can be a gruesome task where you spend the entire day typing, making sure you catch as much of the sessions as absolutely possible and still find time to eat and use the restroom. I personally attempted it once, but we can all see how well that went over (hint: I haven't done it again). Hats off to all those amazing livebloggers out there who do it time and time again at all the major conferences!

Richard Baxter and Barry SchwartzRichard Baxter and Barry Schwartz
Some of the amazing livebloggers you'll see at conferences: Lisa Barone, Richard Baxter, Barry Schwartz, Virginia Nussey

If you're new to liveblogging or tweeting you might want to start small like with a local meetup. With a smaller venue, liveblogging isn't such a daunting task if you only have one or two sessions and speakers to cover. Plus not as many people are covering the small events, so the competition isn't fierce.
Another alternative to liveblogging is livetweeting. While you'll probably only get links to your Twitter account via retweets and Twitter roundup posts, you will probably get more followers who could in turn link to you at some point. Ok, so this may not be a direct link, but the idea of a future link is good enough for me.
In both liveblogging and tweeting, you have to be able to type and type quickly. If that isn't your thing, and you just like to attend the conference, take notes and learn in your own way, there's another tip that will earn you a few links. Bring bloggers food, drinks, a power cord, whatever! If you see that a liveblogger tweets about being thirsty, bring him/her a bottle of water. How much do you want to bet that you'll get a link in that post (or maybe from Twitter) from that blogger? I'd say that's a high likelihood.
In general if you bring someone of the Linkerati something nice, you might get a link out of it. Last year I roomed with Keri Morgret at SES San Jose and she brought triple chocolate muffins to the room!! Now if that doesn't deserve a link from SEOmoz, I don't know what does. Just sayin.

3. Take Photos and/or Video

This is a super fun way to not only get some sweet links but think about how many people you'll meet. It's the easiest way to network at a conference because pretty much all SEOs want their photo taken. :) But the key is, after you take the photos, be sure to publish them! Write a post and link to the people in the pictures or post them on your Facebook page and get more "likes" to your page.

Dana Lookadoo is probably THE BEST at taking great photos throughout the conference and then publishing them right away. She's received several links from the SEOmoz blog for taking photos we used and then linked back to her. In fact, all the photos of the livebloggers from above Dana, took at various conferences (thanks for the great photos again!).

4. Get involved!

Whether the conference is large like an SMX or just a small meetup, everyone loves volunteers to help. This is also a great tip to getting a free pass to an event. Sure you have to put in a little work and help out, but in the end you'll learn a lot and will probably get a link or a thank you on Twitter. Earlier this year I helped Michelle Robbins at SMX West and got a great thank you from her after the fact via Twitter.

Tweet from Michelle Robbins

Just think of the possibilities here. If you can donate a little of your time, you can easily get a link or two out of it.

5. Do something crazy

Seriously, not even kidding here. If you do something out there, something a little different than the norm that people can get excited about, then they're going to write about it! Off the top of my head I can think of three different instances at conferences where people did things just a bit crazy, and the story went completely viral! I'm talking shaving your head, winning a pony and bigwatah. I won't go into all the details about these events but let's quickly look at a few Google searches.

A search for "bigwatah" shows 4 posts talking about the event that happened at SMX East in 2008 plus tons of photos. Then a search for "evan fishkin shave head" (tee hee hee) shows at least 10 posts and 3 videos of Matt Cutts shaving Evan Fishkin's head at Pubcon 2009.

That's just the tip of the iceburg. I'm pretty sure much crazier things have and could happen. As long as you don't hurt anyone in the process, I say get a little crazy!

Whew! That's a lot of linkbuilding that can happen in just a couple days time. As you head out to a conference this summer or fall, think about ways to not only gain knowledge but also to create a few backlinks. Remember that many of the people who will link to you who are at a conference are probably SEOs themselves. Which means they probably (not always, but probably) have a fairly decent authority site to send you some juicy links (dang. did I just say "juicy links" I hate when people say that). I'd love to hear some of your ideas or ways you've been able to build a link or two while attending a conference.

Unconventional Link-Building Ideas

Everybody talks about recip link trades, directory submission and buying links. How about let's share a few unconventional link-building ideas here. I'll give you my best three and if every person who reads this adds just one more we will build one of the best collections on the web.

Ask for the Link: If you have content that people will link to naturally then plant a seed in the mind of your visitors with a "link to us" button or banner. I placed one of these in the persistent navigation of one of my sites and my natural link acquisition rate increased nicely. (I plot total yahoo backlinks on the vertical axis vs time on the horizontal to track my natural link rate for total .edu .gov and .us backlinks. All three lines got distinctly steeper a few days after I installed the buttons and this steeper slope has held.) I believe that if you have really strong content that a link to us button should be on every page and in a prime location. When the button is clicked the visitor is taken to a page with a thank you message and a choice of link codes.

This Site has Everything! I don't hesitate to put a large number of links on the homepage of my sites. I want the visitor to be impressed when they land on my homepage and get the "this site has everything" feeling. Instead of five or six neat categories in the horizontal navigation bar with dropdown menus, I like to have all of those links out in the open and clearly visible. In my opinion this can increase your natural link acquisition rate and I have hard data to confirm that it has increased the average "time-on-site" and pageviews per visitor - at least for my sites. Try it and watch your stats.

Build Content for Specific Link Requests: Some of my best success at linkbuilding has resulted from visiting authority sites in my theme and deciding what is missing from their content or missing from their collections of links to outside sites. I then build content that fills the gaps in their topic coverage and when its ready I make a specific link request. Works almost every time.

OK.... now its your turn. How about just one or two ideas?

17 SEO Tips for Your Marketing Campaign

When you begin your SEO campaign, it can be difficult to separate myth from truth. It seems everyone has different ideas of what works and what doesn't, and even someone who's been in the business awhile can get confused as SEO trends, tactics, and techniques change over the years.
While there may be much discrepancy, these 17 tips for SEO are something most experts seem to agree on. Following these rules, you can avoid some common mistakes and launch a successful campaign.

1. Perform keyword research. This is a very important step in your SEO campaign, before you even begin. Thoroughly research all keywords you may want to use - this can make a huge difference in your strategy.
2. Don't use the same Metas for every page. All your Meta and Title Tags should be unique for each page. Also, make sure to use keywords and write an engaging title.
3. Don't try to deceive the search engines. Don't overuse keywords, hide text, or create doorway pages. These are unethical forms of SEO. With the current trend of search engines favoring ethical SEO, your best practice is to create a well-thought out web page, that has unique content, and is easy to navigate.
4. Avoid low quality links. Not all links are created equal. Instead of getting links from link farms, research the popularity of websites before getting links from them. Alexa ranks are a good way to check popularity, as well as page rank. However, if your own page rank is rather low, fret not, for this will be explained below.
5. Avoid using links with the same anchor text. Search engines do not like links that use the same anchor text and description that are repeated in short bursts.
6. Don't overdo reciprocal links. Reciprocal linking can be valuable, but only when done in small doses, and if the links are relevant to your business. Also, make sure to have a diverse set of links, including links to blogs, forums, articles, social media bookmarking, and more.
7. Don't become obsessed with page rank. Page rank is only a small part of your entire SEO campaign. The way pages are ranked is actually rather complicated, and is based on many factors. It is possible for a lower ranked page to actually be quite successful and get lots of visitors. So if your page rank is low, don't freak out.
8. Do network with other Website owners. This is a great way to learn, get advice, and exchange links. These relationships can be mutually beneficial.
9. Make site updates regularly. Sometimes, an out-of-date website can be worse than no website at all. Make sure you update regularly with current information, news and events, and fresh content. If you want to catch the eye of the search engine robots, regular updates are a great way.
10. Don't compete for single keywords. Instead, compete for keyword phrases. This will make it more likely that your site will show up as a relevant search result. For instance, if your company sells jewelry boxes, and you attempt to compete for the term "boxes," many people who find your site will be looking for cardboard boxes, hat boxes, and other types of boxes, and will likely not stay on your page once they realize you don't sell what they're looking for. If you compete for the phrase "jewelry boxes," it's more likely that potential customers who are looking strictly for jewelry boxes will find you.
11. Research your competition. It's always good to know what the competition is up to, including what they are doing on their website, where they are getting links, etc.
12. Design your Website to be SEO friendly. There is definitely an SEO strategy when it comes to website design. Avoid heavy Flash and lots of graphics, since search engine robots crawl the text, not images. Good Meta and Title Tags are a must, as well as fresh and engaging content. If you're hiring someone to design your website, look for someone who is an expert in organic SEO.
13. Use text links instead of images. If using JavaScript, text links are important since spiders won't follow JavaScript.
14. Keep localization in mind. There are several benefits to reaching out to the local audience. Aside from gaining local customers, including location-based keyword phrases, like "detriot auto body shop," will help you because you will have less competition for that keyword.
15. Don't ignore the power of content. Nothing drives a Website like good content. Make sure your content is engaging, original, and well researched. Use keywords strategically (so they fit in with the natural flow of text).
16. Always proofread. This step should be a given, yet it's not uncommon to see typos and content mistakes on web pages. Aside from providing incorrect information, mistakes, as well as typos, make a web page and its company look unprofessional.
And most importantly...
17. Don't Give Up! SEO is not accomplished overnight. It can be a long process and takes lots of work and sometimes trial and error. Keep up your effort and don't give up!

Advanced Link Building Strategies

Link building requires dedication and consistent effort. It is the most difficult, time-consuming and important task an SEO performs to get a website ranked well. Certain strategies are well known to SEOs, while others are in the realm of the experts or forward-thinkers who puzzle them out. I have attempted to list here many of the link building tactics used by the SEO community.

  1. Directories
Although it may seem an obvious and tired way to build links, directory use is still valuable and valid. I have compiled an exhaustive list of directories including PR, pages that have been spidered, and submission requirements for directories - see List of SEO Directories. When submitting to directories, make sure to vary anchor text and try to use your keywords in the description and title fields as naturally as possible. A good SEO should be able to obtain between 75-150 unique backlinks just from directories.
  2. Top Competition
This tactic can help you generate the most visitors to your site. Search Yahoo, Google, MSN and the other search engines for each of your important keyword phrases and make a point of attempting to get a link from each page. Oftentimes a direct phone call to site owners or a very tactful email can go a long way. I've even used handwritten letters to attempt to cajole site owners into giving me a link. Use whatever resources you have help persuade - links from other sites you own, money (if you have it), free SEO services, contributions of articles or content, etc.
When I use this technique, I'll typically make a spreadsheet listing all of the sites I have a shot at getting a link from (i.e. excluding direct, obvious competitors). I then get as much contact information as I can about each one and run down the list. This can be very time-consuming, but also exceptionally worthwhile. Even if your site doesn't get ranked much higher, each link from a site that ranks in the top 20 will bring direct, targeted traffic.
  3. Link Searches
This old technique has been honed to a science by many SEOs, but there is always room to improve. The goal is to use Google/Yahoo to search for pages that let you add a link (reciprocal, paid, etc.) that already have your keyword or some closely related content on them. Often these searches turn up smalltime site operators with reciprocal link directories managed by 3rd party software. Don't overlook these, and make sure you submit. But the real prize is pages that give free links or offer paid links to sites they feel are important - many of the highest PR links can be obtained through this method, especially if you conduct the search at SEOChat's PR Search Tool.
The following searches are worthy of being tried, but feel free to experiment:
    1. intitle:add+url "keyword phrase"
    2. intitle:submit+site "keyword phrase"
    3. intitle:submit+url "keyword phrase"
    4. intitle:add+site "keyword phrase"
    5. intitle:add+your+site "keyword phrase"
    6. intitle:directory "keyword phrase"
    7. intitle:list "keyword phrase"
    8. intitle:sites "keyword phrase"

All of the above searches can be used without the intitle to give even more results. As with other link building processes, these are tedious and time-consuming, but it is critical to stay focused on finding quality, relevant links. When using this method, make sure you note to which other sites the page is linking and what text content is listed. If it fits well with your content, don't worry if the page is PR0.
  4. Usurping Competitors' Links
Although this may sound unseemly, it is one of the most effective ways to build links, and is commonly practiced. The goal is to find as many domains and pages as possible that link to your competitors' sites and get those sites to link to you as well. This is often easier than it sounds, because the site is already linking out to people in your industry. Money, services, links or simple requests are all used to get the job done.
The most effective ways to find your competitors' links are listed below:
    1. At Yahoo! type linkdomain:url.com -site:url.com
    2. At MSN's techpreview type link:url.com -site:url.com
    3. At Yahoo! type link:http://www.url.com
    4. At Google type "url.com" -site:url.com

These are typically the most reliable way to find the sites and pages that link to your competitors and, incidentally, those sites which link to you. Remember to be as courteous, direct and friendly as possible. Don't forget how effective non-electronic methods of communication can be - phone, letters, etc.

  5. Article Writing & Submission
Writing unique, valuable content about your subject matter for your own site is the most critical piece of on-site SEO. But it can also be a fantastic way to generate quality links from other sites. Many existing websites are designed around hosting the content of others and providing links back to them. I have listed some of the biggest 3rd-party article hosting sites below.

These are just some of the thousands of sites that offer the ability to spread your content around the web. Additional sites on your specific topics can be found using the search engines. Especially prevalent are sites offering content in website marketing & technology - there are hundreds of sites that deal in content on these issues.

  6. Forums & Online Communities
Generating links through forums is often considered spam, but forums are valuable tools for link builders as long as the proper methods are employed. The forum signature of a member is certainly a fair place to promote your site, and while doing so may not provide a worthy backlink in the search engines' eyes, it does offer visitors on the forum a chance to see your site.
The primary goal of joining a forum should be to contribute and learn from the community, but promotion certainly isn't out of place, as long as it remains on-topic. In SEO forums, people constantly plug their new directories, tools, articles, etc. These are all appropriate as long as they are subtle, relevant and not overdone.
When a specific page, tool or link would provide a great resource or answer to a question in a community, don't hesitate to provide it. Much of the information used to write this article and the SEO Survey tool was provided in forums through links. Just remember to carefully read the terms of use for the forums you post in - many are harsh if they feel someone is there to spam or advertise.
  7. Blogging & Comments
Blogging is a very effective way to get natural inbound links, and by having a personal blog at your site, you can more easily make commentary at other sites that link back to you. DO NOT spam blog comments with advertisements; your goal is to create an online reputation you can be proud of. Blog owners and visitors will not take kindly to blog spam. The key to effective blogging for links is to make sure you comment relevantly & intelligently about the specific subject in the blog. A well thought-out response to a relevant blog or article can bring not only search engines, but more importantly other readers of the blog to your site through the link. If your content proves interesting, you could build much more than just a single link through your comments.
Another important thing to remember is that your link in blog comments may not count at all in the search engines. Many blogs prevent access to these comments or don't provide direct, spiderable links for blog visitors. This, combined with the fact that these comments are buried at least 2-3 links deep from the main page means that you should keep your focus on the visitors you might generate, rather than the search engine optimization you might get.
However, you should still be as SE friendly as possible. If the subject matter deals directly with your keyword phrases, you're in fine shape, but if they are on related subjects, it can't hurt to use your keyword phrase(s) once or twice in a longer comment/entry. You should also try to make your 'name' - which is typically the anchor text for your link contain at least one of your kw phrases, but remember to keep it varied and never let it overtake the importance of getting visitors, i.e. if your site is about Orange County T-Shirts, having a 'name' of OC-Tshirt-Man can't hurt you, but Orange-County-T-Shirts is probably not as wise.
  8. Renting Pages from Authority Sites
This tactic is not often mentioned, but can be extremely valuable. The premise is to rent, for a monthly fee, a page hosted on a larger or more authoritative site in your industry. You then add content & links on the page to your own site(s) with the anchor text you choose and in the format you select. These are almost like 'advertorials' in magazines, where you provide content that the site links to (hopefully not more than 2 links from the homepage) and then link back to your own site.
The fundamental difference between this tactic and simple article hosting is that you approach a site or company that doesn't normally host other people's content about having your information. Although rejection is often likely, the benefits can be phenomenal, as the page itself may rank well for your search terms very quickly.
  9. Purchasing Online Advertising
Link building through advertising is exceptionally expensive, but it can bring in good returns if properly managed. Make sure as you buy links that you get the click-through rate from the seller for the past 6 months. You should get a lot of other statistics to review as well - make sure to avoid advertising in places where the seller doesn't have good information on click-through rates, visitors, etc. You'll also have to work around re-direct scripts, links sent through ad networks (like DoubleClick), etc. As long as you are up front and friendly, you'll be able to have some success in this arena as long as you have the funding.
  10. Text Link Brokers
Although initial thoughts about link brokers can give a bad impression, this new industry can actually have a positive value on your link building efforts. I recommend against purchasing sitewide links unless your only goal is to build PR (i.e. directories or SEO related sites, etc.). Sitewide links have come to be associated with "manipulation" of the SERPs by search engines and should be largely avoided. However, purchasing text links on specific, related sites surrounded by the content of your choice can be beneficial, if difficult to find.
The key to a successful text link is that all the components of natural SEO are there:
    • Is the page closely related to your site's topic?
    • Is the link placed in a strategic position - i.e. not in an obvious advertising space or footer?
    • Is the site related to the topic of your site and the topic of the page?
    • Is the site spidered frequently by the search engines and do the pages have visible PR?

If the link meets these criteria, it could be very worthwhile. However, be careful to avoid paying high prices for a particular page or site, simply because of its PR. It is more likely that multiple low PR (3,4 & 5) pages are worth more to you than a single PR7 or 8.
Several lists of text links sellers are available online:

    1. Link Sellers - List of Text Link Ad Sellers
    2. Text Link Brokers - Discussion and some links at SearchEngineWatch Forums

Be wary and always do some search research and asking at the major SEO forums prior to buying from text link brokers. The industry is, sadly, rife with scammers & companies that don't deliver as promised.

  11. Unique Tools & Services
By offering specific, relevant free Internet tools/services at your site, you can generate naturally built links. My recommendation is to find a tool or service that isn't currently offered or that you believe you can improve upon. For some industries, this will be much harder than others, but creativity is your best tool. Imagine what automated web service, list of resources or submission-type tool would best benefit you and then build it and offer it on your site.
Some excellent examples are listed below (these come straight from my imagination):
    • For a site about animals, a tool that visually diagrams the phylum/genus/species relationships
    • For a site about travel, a tool that creates a pre-planned itinerary based on a selection of interests
    • For a site about real estate, a tool that estimates property value or gives a % chance of selling for a based on time, region & price.

The possibilities are endless, and there is little doubt that the web can automate and make easier hundreds of tasks in any industry. The key, after you have built your tool, is to promote it with industry leaders - send it to bloggers who discuss your subject matter, ask people to use and evaluate it on forums, etc. You can even try to promote it by writing an article about your findings, rapidshare downloads, development or the simple existence of the tool and submitting it across the newswires.

  12. Automated Link Building Programs
Many SEOs feel that automated link building is a surefire way to get banned/penalized by the search engines. If you are caught practicing this tactic, I would certainly agree. However, for those willing to take risks, the rewards can be substantial. Well-built and well hidden link networks often bring higher rankings in a short amount of time. The key is to select a provider who will offer the following:
    1. A vastly distributed network that is not interlinked and doesn't share any C-Block IP addresses
    2. Linking pages that contain some relevant content that has been well-linked through a sitemap system
    3. Pages that are as close to naturally-designed and built as possible
    4. A company that can speak at an expert level about SEO and the tactics they use to avoid detection - call them and talk to them first; their knowledge and competence should be instantly apparent.
    5. Someone you trust and have researched thoroughly - I DO NOT recommend posting on forums about these companies, as you could damage your chances for success. Just ask for recommendations from trusted members of the SEO community.
    6. Pages that link not only to your site(s) but to other relevant, related sites as well - even if they are your competition. That way, if you get penalized, at least your competition is suffering as well.

This is one of the riskiest strategies that can be pursued in link building and I recommend it only with extreme caution. You are breaking the search engine's printed rules by "intentionally manipulating the search results" and you should have a contingency plan in the event of disaster.

  13. Donations & Charity
Many high PR websites are run by charity organizations, open-source technology groups & the like. Contributions of time, money or resources in exchange for links are commonplace and very worthwhile. For this type of link building, relevancy is still important, but you may not be able to find any link partners in this segment if you focus solely on topic-sensitive sites & pages. It may be very worthwhile to donate regardless and see if the links from PR7 & 8 pages can help to boost your importance.
In order to find sites like these, I use the PR Search tool at SEOChat to search for terms/phrases like donate, contribute, give, etc. Appending your broadest search terms to these types of words can help you find the sites most likely to pass you a good link. Remember that even if non-profits, charities, etc. don't have a link program in place, they may be more than happy to provide a special link for you if you request it when contributing. If nothing else, these links and the time/money you spend getting them are a great way to sleep better at night.
  14. Press Releases
Press releases written by an SEO firm can contain a carefully worded title, well placed keywords and a link to the site that is the subject of the article. SEOs have been using press release services for some time, and as with many other things, the more you spend, the better distribution is. Press releases can also rank well on their own, particularly in the first few days/weeks of release as they receive the 'fresh content' boost in the SERPs. A particularly interesting or well-written press release may even garner the attention of some larger players in the new market, and if your article is picked up by one or several good sources, it can serve as a great boon to traffic and exposure.
Success relies on the careful crafting of the article itself - providing excellent, factual information in a way that is interesting to read and relevant to the industry. Hiring a journalism student for $100-$200 an article or a more experienced professional for more may well be worth the money. In any case, the press release needs to be sent through a distribution site. The following are popular in the SEO industry because they offer links, serve to a large variety of sites and provide enough flexibility to let an SEO perform well.

The top two sites listed are the largest, with the greatest distribution networks, but each site offers its own unique benefits and some are less expensive than others. It is worthwhile, especially if you have the money and are in a competitive arena, to opt for the maximum spend at PRWeb - somewhere around $250 per article. The distribution that is achieved will determine the value of the links and the article. It's also important to keep in mind that duplicate content penalties may hurt you - DO NOT re-publish the press release on your own site.

  15. Natural Link Building
Although undoubtedly a difficult and time consuming method, as well as one of the more unreliable ones, natural link building is what powers most of the top sites on the Internet. This method involves developing the most useful, relevant content that provides the best resources, tools, services, prices, etc. in the industry. By offering the web community the best possible site, you can gain natural links through the power of having others on the web link to you.
Sadly, this tactic is somewhat usurped by the search engines, as newer sites often fair exceptionally poorly in the search results, especially for popular terms. In order to build natural links, people must be exposed to your site. At one time natural link building was the very best method to get traffic and links, but in the current state of search and traffic, it is more of a boost that you use to help convert some of the webmasters & bloggers who might visit your site into link builders.
Building valuable content is no easy task, and building an industry-leading resource is even more challenging. However, the long-term benefits can be spectacular, assuming you have the money and time to maintain your resource without proportional income. Remember to ask yourself what someone who comes to your site might want and try to provide the absolute best service/information in your industry in the cleanest, most usable site possible

Yup, SEO Can Be A Competitive Advantage

As a passionate (OK, maybe obsessed is the right word) startup guy and someone who loves SEO, I couldn't help but want to jump into the fray with some thoughts on how the field we're in - domination of the organic search results - can be an unfair, competitive advantage for businesses that know how to wield it.

The core of Jason's post is below:

The first step is admitting you have a problem.

Last week I detailed the most common misconceptions about competitive advantages, so go read that if you haven't already.

To summarize: Anything that can be copied will be copied, including features, marketing copy, and pricing. Anything you read on popular blogs is also read by everyone else. You don't have an "edge" just because you're passionate, hard-working, or "lean."

The only real competitive advantage is that which cannot be copied and cannot be bought.

Like what?

And he's got a number of terrific answers, but SEO, and more broadly, phenomenal organic web marketing, isn't among them. Before I tackle why I think it belongs there, let me explain the difference between "good" SEO and defensible, "competitive advantage" style SEO.

"Good" SEO means

  • You have a solid quantity of unique, quality content that users and customers will find useful.
  • Your pages and links are crawlable, indexable and generally search friendly.
  • You've done your homework with keyword research and update it regularly (monthly - quarterly) as new terms/phrases rise/fall in demand.
  • You've engaged in some decent link acquisition campaigns, garnering links from a few authorities in your industry, some blogs, maybe a few article sites, press releases, link exchanges and the like to the point where you have similar metrics to your competition.
  • You've engaged in social media and have profiles on the major sites, have a few tweets every week that point to your site and a few hundred fans on Facebook.

In other words, you've followed best practices, done the "right" things and while an SEO audit might reveal some missed opportunities and an error here or there, you'd generally come away with an "A" on your SEO report card.

"Competitive Advantage" SEO means

  • Your site produces content people love to visit and love to share in a scalable, hard-to-replicate way
  • Your on-site SEO is "best of breed." Note: This isn't much different than good SEO - on-page/on-site optimization is unlikely to ever be a competitive advantage.
  • Your keyword research is baked into the content generation process. The material your site produces fulfills keyword demand just as, or even before it exists by tapping into the subconscious of the web and the culture of ideas/questions in your industry/niche.
  • Website owners and content creators have a powerful psychological incentive to link to your work frequently, just as those who participate/contribute to the social web are incented to share via their network of choice.

Some Examples of "Competitive Advantage" SEO Sites:

  • StackOverflow
  • Yelp
  • Wikipedia
  • LinkedIn
  • Mashable
  • Last.fm
  • NY Magazine
  • Amazon
  • Cheezburger Network
  • Wordpress
  • AllRecipes
  • SmashingMagazine

All of these have content pouring out of them, generated rapidly, scalable, and in time with query demand. They have broad networks of patrons and participants that incent the spreading and sharing of their content through links and social networks. They employ content+SEO+sharing in a high-return equation that's nearly impossible for competitors to match. I'll illustrate:

Runners

That's not to say they can't be beaten, but runner B (a new competitor) is going to have to go dramatically faster than runner A (the market leader) if they want to catch up before runner A sees them coming and turns up the jets.

SEO Can Be a Competitive Advantage

This is my argument for why the level of truly great SEO I described above, belongs on the list of unfair competitive advantages.

  1. It's massively hard to duplicate
  2. It's prohibitively expensive to buy (and just buying the link influence signals violates guidelines)
  3. It requires tremendous creativity paired with exceptional execution and a time-bounded network effect (all of the sites I mentioned have dramatically increased their lead over time and continue to do so)

It's certainly not the only option, but it can have a dramatic impact. If you're starting a company, starting an SEO campaign or just want to renew your vision for how your site will go from ranking for a few keywords to becoming a dominant market player, it's, at the least, a strategy worthy of consideration.

  23. Run a contest and promote it.
Photo contests, essay contests, goofy contests, random drawings, anything. Example: Messiest Garage in America contest on OfftheFloor.com.
  24. Join your local business organizations.

    (More about good Internet citizenship.)

Market Research for Link Building - Who You Can Get Links From

Following on from my debut SEOmoz blog post on How to Get Links in Tough Industries, I wanted to go into a bit more detail about the processes you can use to find people who are likely to link to you.  Using the right processes to identify the leaders in your industry can give you a much better return on your time spent link building.  This is for two reasons -

  1. You are finding people with a genuine interest in your industry who are more likely to reply to you
  2. You are finding people who are influential which can lead to more links from their audience

We all know that link building is hard, it takes time, patience and an uncanny ability to handle rejection.  I often like to talk about improving your link building conversion rate, if you can do this then you are making your life a lot easier.  This post is designed to help improve your link building conversion rate by reaching out to the right people.

Here is a quick visual to show you the basic process of what you are doing:

This is the process I like to work to when getting links from specific targets.  It is very simple but from experience, many people struggle with finding the right people to get links from.   Here are some specific ways you can find these people.  I'll probably cover the other areas in more detail in a subsequent post.

Getting Inspiration

I like to start the process by brainstorming a few ideas of what type of people are interested in my topic, luckily I've got some great colleagues to bounce ideas off and help with this process.  If you tend to struggle with this process, Spezify is quite a nice tool for visualizing a topic and seeing what is happening online related to that topic.  This can often give you some links to places you may not have previously thought of to reach out to.

Find Influential Tweeters

Although strictly speaking, Twitter is not good for building links,  finding people on Twitter who have a large number of followers and have a lot of influence can be very useful in spreading the word for you.  These people usually have their own websites outside of Twitter too that may be of help to you for traditional link building.

Internet Marketing With Search Engine Optimization Services

Both when synchronized together makes for a very strong combination and ensure that the website does exceptionally well over the web. It is for this reason that every service provider which offers search engine optimization services will always propagate its internet marketing services as well.

The link building part ensures that the website gets linked to other websites and is able to be associated with well. People find it easy to come over to the portal and pay it a visit.

Internet marketing is online marketing. The marketing campaign happens over the web. The whole project is directed towards enhancing the image of the service on various websites and portals so that people know the product better. The product/service/idea is given more visibility and exposure through this form of marketing. People get to know it better and can identify with it. Since well all use the web every day, people find it easy to go through the service from the comfort of their home. They can analyze whether it would benefit them in some way or not.

When both of them are performed together, the website experiences profound growth. One ensures that it becomes a top ranked site and the other ensures that it gets good publicity over the web. Both ways, the website grows. When the website achieves a top rank, people come to know of it well. When it gets marketed online, people are able to associate with it much better. This happens because they have already seen its performance and have their interests aroused when they see it well marketed on the web.

These two processes are an integral part of the growth of the website and ensure that the site does well by all means. 5 Important Differences Between SEM and SEO Experts

SEO vs SEM_icon Internet marketing or online advertising is ripe with terms that we obviously have heard of very often - Search Engine Marketing (SEM) and Search Engine Optimization (SEO). The extent to which these terms are popular and widely used is highly contrasting to the level of awareness and understanding that people have about them, especially how these terms are different.

Let us try to understand how SEM and SEO compare with each other in terms of implementation and what different skill the experts in each field are expected and required to have.

First the Definition:

SEM as it is popularly referred to is related to displaying advertisement, mostly in form of some text, accompanied with the results shown on a search engine. E.g. you must have noticed the text advertisements that are displayed either at the top or on the right column of a search result page of a search engine such as Google, Bing etc. Such advertisements are popularly known as sponsored links.

On the other hand, Search Engine Optimization or SEO is the procedure of designing and programming your web page or web site such that it fetches a higher rank in the list of search-engine results.

Desired skill set for SEO and SEM experts

As we now understand that while SEO is more a technical or procedural application and SEM is more related to planning, an SEO expert is required to have deeper knowledge about web designing and an SEM expert requires a broader understanding to the overall online advertising domain.

Talking about technical requirements, an SEO expert required to have skill such as web designing, programming and software, and knowledge of search-engine technologies. An SEM expert may not require such extensive technical skills but should rather have advertising and marketing skills.

The two fields also differ in terms of the time period required for each to show results. While search engine marketing may provide you instant results and returns, whereas search-engine-optimization is a comparatively long term process as search-engines take time in analyzing and indexing your websites.

If you are a new-fangled to the Internet marketing, you possibly will have a number of questions concerning the differences between SEO & SEM. Well, these interior marketing subjects are really in fact very different. However they share a few amount of similarities too.

Other difference lies in the fact that a Search Engine Optimization expert doesn't have to deal with the search-engine administration directly as most of his activity are is the web page or web site that he is designing and building. A Search Engine Marketing expert has to deal with the search engine administration directly as he may have to plan what advertisements have to be displayed, what will be the associated costs, and what factors will determine the display of the advertisements.

As we can understand, a Search-Engine-Marketing expert has to take more of managerial and business level decisions whereas a Search-Engine-Optimization expert has to be more technical and scientific in his approach.

Quick Recap:
The 5 Important Differences between SEM and SEO Experts:
• SEM: displaying advertisement & SEO: designing and programming your web page.
• SEM: Requires Planning & SEO: Technical or procedural application.
• SEO Specialist need to have deeper knowledge & SEM expert requires a broader understanding.
• SEO expert must have web designing, programming & SEM expert not required.
• SEM deals directly with search engine administration & SEO not requires.

SEO Link Building Service Tips

imageA seo backlink building service is an essential tool for the modern web master. In today's competitive business environment having an edge is vital for success. This is especially true on the internet where your competition can number in the thousands or more. This is where a such a service comes in.

Seo link building services work based on how search engines work. In order for your site to appear more often on search results it must be determined as useful by the search engine. One way that search engines determine this is by looking for sites that link back to your site without having a link on your site to the site who linked to yours. This is called one way link building.

A seo backlink building service is there for search engine optimization. This means that such a service will create back links for you on the internet. This way search engines will come across links to your site more often and thereby increase your page rank. The seo link building service will create one way links for you on the internet.

A good service will not just create hundreds of duplicate links. Search giants such as Google now identify such marketing tactics through special web filters and actively screen for such spam like tactics. There is very little effectiveness in creating hundreds or thousands of low quality backlinks when they can be identified as spam and penalized.

A seo link building service must constantly be able to create new ways and new ideas on how to do an effective and successful search engine optimization service. New back links that are created must be unique and of a high standard. That is the mark of a good seo link building service.

A good service will have done its own testing and research and have hard, proven data on what kinds of strategies work for your website. A seo link building service is no mean feat. It requires a great deal of creativity to make new opportunities for link building or to take advantage of existing opportunities in new and previously unseen ways.

A seo link building service must also have technical knowhow and expertise to properly and effectively create backlinks for you using the right technology at the right places at the right times. Most importantly a good service will put in the effort required and go the extra mile to make sure that you get the right service.

A lot keeps changing in the search engine optimization (SEO) arena. A lot has changed in SEO link building in the last year or so. The information below sums these changes and should help you a long way in improving the rank of your website.

The Addition of Website Speed as a Ranking Parameter

One of the most recent addition to Google's website ranking algorithm is the addition of the speed parameter. According to Matt Cutts, the SEO and search quality head in Google, speed was added as a parameter early 2010. He said that according to in-house researches in, it was revealed that internet searchers enjoy fast loading websites and spend more time on search sites.
